Duplicating post types and taxonomies registered with Custom Post Type UI

While it was actually not a planned feature, it is possible to use Custom Post Type UI to duplicate post types and taxonomies. If you have a planned list that are all going to have matching or similar labels and settings, then this handy trick will help get you set up quickly.

Note: This will apply for CPTUI version 1.0.0 or higher.

Note: This will not duplicate existing posts or terms in the content type. It will only duplicate settings used for the post types or taxonomies.

Set up the initial post type or taxonomy

First you will want to configure and save your first content type. Set the labels and the settings the way you will be wanting for it, as well as more afterwards.

Performing the duplication

Once you have saved the “template” post type or taxonomy, to get the next one started, you will want to rename the slug being used for it, but
DO NOT check the checkbox to migrate posts or terms. If you want, you can edit other fields, like the labels to match the new intended slug. You can also do this afterwards, it shouldn’t matter.

Once satisfied, click the save button again. This should create a new entry in your list of post types or taxonomies, instead of replacing the previous one. Continue to do this until you are happy with your results.
